Sovereign backup for iCloud

Your iCloud, backed up to storage you actually own.

micloud keeps a private, real-time copy of everything in your iCloud - photos, files, calendars, notes - on infrastructure you control. A second copy that's always yours, working right alongside iCloud, so nothing you care about ever lives in just one place.

You're on the list - we'll email you at launch.
Be first when micloud opens. No spam - just launch news.
Live · real product
MailAn email lands on your Mac - and instantly on the server you own.
PhotosYour whole photo library, mirrored to hardware you control.
NotesEvery note you jot, copied to storage that's yours.
FilesDrop a file on your Mac - it's on your own server too.
The problem

iCloud is convenient. It's also entirely Apple's.

Your photos, files, and memories live on Apple's terms. One locked account, one policy change, one outage - and access to a lifetime of data can vanish overnight. iCloud syncs your devices; it isn't a backup you own. There's no second copy that's truly yours. micloud is that copy.

It happens more than you'd think

One account can be a single point of failure.

Real, documented cases. None of this is a knock on iCloud - it's the plain risk of keeping your only copy in any single place.

Wiped in minutes

Attackers reached one journalist's iCloud and remotely erased his MacBook, iPhone and iPad - deleting a year and a half of his young daughter's photos, the only copies he had.

Wired, 2012 →
When access pauses

Any account, with any provider, can be locked or suspended - a flagged payment, a forgotten password, a simple mistake. A second copy you own keeps working right through it.

How account recovery works →
Sync isn't a backup

Delete a photo and it's gone from every device. Ransomware encrypts your files and the bad copies sync up over the good ones. iCloud keeps deleted items ~30 days - then they're gone.

Why sync ≠ backup →

micloud is the second copy the asks for - independent, off your live sync, and truly yours.

How it works

1× the storage. Real-time. Invisible.

micloud runs quietly on a Mac signed into your iCloud and mirrors it to your own storage - without keeping a heavy second copy on the Mac.

01 · SEE

A change appears

The moment a new photo, file, or edit lands in your iCloud, micloud notices it - within seconds, not on an hourly timer.

02 · STREAM

Grab just that item

It pulls down only the one thing that changed, streams it straight to your own storage, then clears the local copy.

03 · OWN

Safe in your hands

Your copy lives on hardware you control - one-way only. micloud reads from iCloud and never writes back to it.

A 200 GB iCloud library needs only a few GB on the Mac - so a small, cheap bridge can shadow a huge account, updated in real time.
And because it mirrors from iCloud itself - not a phone app that iOS keeps putting to sleep - it never misses a shot, even while your phone's asleep in your pocket.
What it protects

All of iCloud - each to an open home you can host yourself.

Not just photos. micloud mirrors the whole surface of your Apple account to open, self-hostable software.

Private by design

You hold the keys.

Your data is yours. Not ours, not Apple's, not anyone's. That's the architecture, not a promise you have to take on faith.

Encrypted to your key

Your backup is encrypted in transit and at rest with a key only you hold, so the storage host can't read it and your backups are yours alone. Self-host and micloud never touches your data; managed, and it's your own isolated instance, encrypted to your key. Want zero-knowledge even while it's running? Turn on end-to-end mode.

One-way and sealed

micloud only ever reads from iCloud. It can't write back, change, or delete a single thing in your Apple account. Your copy flows one way, into storage that answers to you.

Trust nothing. Verify everything.

micloud is open source. Every line is public, so "private" isn't a marketing word here, it's code you can read for yourself. Don't take our word for it, take the source.

Think of the managed plan like a safety-deposit box: we look after the vault, but the box is yours - and no one else's things ever go in it.

You, and only you, sign into your iCloud - even on Concierge, you type your own Apple password (we never see it). We run and maintain the Mac to keep your backup healthy; your data stays encrypted with a key only you hold.

The whole point of micloud is that you don't have to trust anyone. Including us.

Two ways to own your cloud

Do it yourself - or let us do it for you.

Same open-source app, same result: a private copy of your iCloud on storage you own. Choose how hands-on you want to be.

Free & open source

Do it yourself

Download the open-source micloud app, run it on an always-on Mac you own, and point it at your own storage. No account with us, no data through us - audit every line and own the whole chain, end to end.

  • An always-on Mac - a Mac mini, Studio, or a hosted Mac (e.g. MacStadium)
  • Your own Nextcloud + Immich - on an Umbrel, or any host you like (Hetzner, Vultr, AWS…)
  • About 30 minutes with the guided setup wizard

Why micloud

Built to be yours - light, live, and one-way.

1×
One copy of your data, not two. A thin rolling cache does the work - no doubling your storage.
~5s
Real-time, not hourly. Changes reach your copy within seconds of appearing on the Mac.
1-way
micloud only reads from iCloud. It can never alter or delete anything in your Apple account.
0
Your data never passes through us. It goes straight from your Mac to storage you own.
Open formats - Immich, Nextcloud, standard DAV. No lock-in, ever. Leave whenever you like.
Why this exists

I didn't set out to build a product.

I build sovereign, self-hosted infrastructure for a living. One day it hit me that the most irreplaceable things I own, years of photos and a lifetime of files, all sat in one account, and I'd never kept a copy of my own. One wrong tap or one lost login, and there'd be nothing else to fall back on.

So I built myself a second copy: a live mirror of my whole iCloud onto storage I own, that no lockout, deletion, or outage can reach.

What surprised me wasn't the tech. It was how much calmer I felt afterwards, knowing that whatever happened, my life had a second home on hardware that answered to me.

That's when it clicked. Almost everyone wants that same reassurance, and almost no one can build it for themselves. So I'm opening up the exact thing I run for me. Same code, same principle. Your life, your copy, your keys.

Backup best practice

The 3-2-1 rule

The principle the pros live by, so nothing they care about is ever one failure away from gone.
3
Three copies

Keep at least three copies of anything you'd hate to lose - the original plus two backups. One copy is a single point of failure; three means two things have to fail at the same time before you're in trouble.

2
Two kinds of storage

Put them on two different types of media or service, so one failure mode can't take them all at once - a bad drive, a ransomware strain, or one provider going down.

1
One off-site & independent

Keep at least one copy somewhere else, disconnected from your live sync - so a fire, theft, account lockout, or ransomware spreading across your synced devices still can't reach it.

Where micloud fits: iCloud is copy #1 - a single, always-synced copy. micloud adds copy #2 on your own storage (different media), independent of iCloud's sync - so a wipe, lockout, or ransomware can't touch it. That's what turns "it's all in iCloud" into a real backup.
